swimming pool safety tips

Having a swimming pool in your backyard is fun, especially when everyone is in the pool and having a blast.

However, swimming pool safety is more than just the proper handling of chemicals or keeping it clean from algae.

Being prepared for an emergency can be the difference in saving a life; and nobody can put a price tag on a life.

SwimSV.com has put together this safety guide for homeowners. We take pool safety very seriously and know how important it is for every pool owner to be aware as well.

Here are a few items that a pool owner to be aware of. Always be prepared and take preventative actions in emergency situations.

  1. If you have children, it’s a good idea to have a pool gate. Always keep the pool gate locked. Even if you do not have children in your household, it is ALWAYS best to keep the pool gate secured. You never know when an unexpected visitor can make their way to your swimming pool.
  2. Install door alarms that sound off when the swimming pool access door is opened. This is particularly recommended for households with children. In our home, we use Vivint.com security system.
  3. Keep your water safe. Maintain proper water chemistry balance and levels of sanitization to eliminate bacteria and algae. You can either do this yourself or hire a local pool guy to perform weekly maintenance.
  4. Never leave your children unattended. Designate a “child watcher” when having gatherings and/or pool parties. Most drowning cases occur when people are around. Drowning is the number one cause of accidental death in children under the age of five.
  5. Have a phone close by at all times in case you need to call for help, and if a child is missing, check the pool first.
  6. Know how to perform CPR. Find a class in town to learn basic first-aid techniques. CPR certification are available in Simi Valley community center, hospital, or American Red Cross.
  7. Teach children how to swim. Swimming is a lifesaving skill. Children will be children and sometimes, fun in the pool can get out of hand. Knowing how to swim can safe a life.
  8. Have an anti-vortex, main drain cover installed. These covers prevent a swimmer from getting caught in the suction of the main drain — preventing any person or objects from getting stuck to the surface.
  9. Cannonballs are fun. Make sure you have enough space to jump in the water to avoid landing on someine in the pool.
  10. Keep a life ring handy for easy access. For smaller pools, you could reach in and pull a child out of the water. But if you have a larger pool, this device can safe a life.

Our safety guidelines might sound dramatic, but a few seconds could be a life-altering situation.

Don’t take pool safety for granted.

Have fun swimming, but also be mindful of these safety precautions.
